This San Clemente and catacombs tour in Rome offers a different way to experience the city, taking you into its hidden underground spaces. Instead of focusing on monuments above ground, it shows how layers of history exist beneath your feet.
At the Basilica of San Clemente, you move down through different periods of time. Starting from the present church, you gradually reach older structures, including a 4th-century basilica and earlier Roman buildings below. It is one of the clearest examples of how Rome was built over itself.
The visit continues at the catacombs along the Via Appia Antica, where early Christians created underground burial tunnels. The atmosphere here is quiet and simple, with narrow corridors and carved niches that reflect belief and tradition.

Very informative and well guided. The catacombs were quieter than expected, which made the visit more meaningful.
I enjoyed the balance between history and atmosphere. It felt calm and very different from the busy city above.
